Happy World Book Night 2017!

world book night 2017The Reading AgencyQuick Reads

World Book Night is one of my favourite book celebrations, not just because I adore books and reading my self but, also because of the sentiment behind it. It’s all about celebrating the joy of reading and to encourage those people to read; people who don’t read for pleasure or do not at all and the giving of books. Reading has helped me in so many ways; I would defiantly say it has improved my writing, spelling and grammar and my reading has also has improved and these are but a few!!!

Here’s a bit of background on World Book Night

World Book Night started in 2011 in the UK and Ireland and back then the date of the celebration was March the 5th. Then in 2012 the date was moved to the current date of April the 23rd not only because its International Day Of Books but it’s most commonly known as the birth and death date of William Shakespeare who wrote plays like; Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth.

Back in 2013 World Book Night became part of The Reading Agency which is connected to the children’s celebration of books World Book Day and Quick Reads. (You can read more about this here Love Quick Reads! )

As well as sharing with regular readers World Book Night would really like to reach particular groups. (as seen on the website)

  • Isolated and venerable older people
  • Less confident adult readers or those who don’t read for pleasure
  • LGBT groups
  • Men and women of all ages in prisons
  •  People with mental heath issues
  • Parents and venerable pregnant women
  • Young people who don’t read for pleasure

World Book Night also brings together printers, publishers, booksellers and libraries to encourage more people to read and to pass on books. Each year and well before the evening you can go on there website and vote for which books you would like to see for that particular years books that will be given out. There is always a wide selection of book so there’s bound to be something for everone! Also prior to the actual evening you and apply to be a volunteer to be a book giver. I did this back in 2012 when I first came across this book celebration. When I was accepted I was so happy to be apart of it; I chose to give out The Take by Martina Cole. The reason I picked this book out of all the others that were chosen for 2012; was because this was the book that got me hooked in that particular genre and I wanted to share that with others!
